Installing a commercial ice machine
Correct installation is essential to the performance, efficiency and lifespan of your ice machine. Before installation, there are a few key requirements to consider – from ventilation and water supply to drainage and power.
What your ice machine needs
The location and setup of your machine can have a significant impact on its performance. Getting these essentials right from the start helps ensure reliable ice production and reduces the risk of unnecessary issues down the track. Before installation, make sure your space meets these key requirements.
Clearance
Allow at least 150 mm around the machine for adequate airflow, with additional space (at least 300mm) recommended in hot or enclosed areas.
Water supply
A clean water supply with the correct pressure is essential for consistent ice production. Water quality should also be considered, particularly in hard-water areas.
Drainage
The drain needs a continuous downhill fall, without kinks or rises that can cause water to back up.
Power
Many smaller machines operate from a standard 10 amp outlet, while larger units may require a dedicated circuit, higher amperage or three-phase power.
Temperature
Most machines are designed to operate in ambient temperatures up to approximately 38°C. Hot or poorly ventilated spaces can reduce ice production and affect performance.
Service access
Allow enough space around the machine for panels to be removed and for servicing and maintenance to be carried out safely and easily.
Common installation issues
Even the right machine can underperform if the installation isn’t right. Some of the most common issues we see include:
Restricted airflow
Installing a machine inside tight cabinetry or against walls can prevent heat from escaping.
Too close to cooking equipment
Heat and grease from fryers and grills can affect airflow, clog condensers and reduce performance.
Poor drainage
An uphill, kinked or blocked drain can cause water to back up into the machine.
An uneven surface
Ice machines need to be installed level to ensure water flows and freezes correctly.
Limited service access
Allow enough room for panels to be removed so the machine can be properly serviced and maintained.
Hot operating conditions
Perth’s summer heat can push back-of-house temperatures up, reducing ice production and making the machine work harder.
Not sure if your space is suitable?
Send us a photo of your proposed installation location along with the approximate dimensions. Our team can help determine whether the space is suitable and identify any requirements before your machine is installed.
